Stephen Itagaki, a world famous biologist, decides to use the intact mammoth DNA to create a clone of the mammoth. Unknown to Dr. Itagaki, the mammoth DNA also contains an ancient, and now extinct retrovirus that had been the cause of the death of the animal. The virus is reactivated when the cloned baby mammoth is born. It soon morphs into a form that spreads rapidly and causes a deadly disease in the human population. Medical researchers around the world race to find a cure or a vaccine, but the virus is spreading too fast.

The President of the United States takes refuge deep under the Atlantic Ocean in a nuclear submarine and prepares to order massive nuclear attacks on cities that are infested with the disease. The President is told that a small team of researchers in Ireland has created a working vaccine, but their accomplishment is ignored. The countdown to thermonuclear “cleansing” of the virus-infected parts of the world begins.
